Why Choose The Pain Management Center?

Because we are knowledgeable...

Did you know that lower back pain is second only to the common cold as a cause of work absences? or that 65 million Americans suffer from painful illnesses each year? Galesburg Cottage Hospital's Pain Management Center recognizes chronic pain as one of the leading health causes of family problems, decreased productivity and unemployment.

Because we are professional...

Galesburg Cottage Hospital's Pain Management Center focuses on the most effective way to treat patients that are suffering from acute and chronic pain. Dr. Richard Adkins, along with the caring and experienced staff at the Cottage Pain Management Center, offers comprehensive care with modern-day techniques for the treatment of painful disorders.

Because we care...

Any kind of pain can greatly impair a person's ability to enjoy daily aspects of his or her life. A person who suffers the effects of pain often misses out on life's important events because their pain has become unmanageable. Our goal is simple: we want to control the pain in order to improve the quality of life for our patients. We want to help you regain your physical and spiritual enjoyment of life.

Office hours are by appointment only. To schedule an appointment at the Cottage Hospital Pain Management Center, talk to a nurse, or leave a message for the doctor, please call (309) 345-4846.

Epidural Steroid Injections

The use of spinal injections to treat low back pain was first documented in 1901, and in 1952 epidural steroid injections were first used to treat low back pain with associated sciatica (pain in the sciatic nerve due to lumbar disc herniation). Today, epidural steroid injections have become an integral part of non-surgical management of low back pain.

Epidural Steroid Injections provide sufficient pain relief to allow the patient to progress with their rehabilitation program. Following are some frequently asked questions about this simple procedure:

What is an epidural steroid injection?

It is an injection of local anesthetic and steroid deposited into the epidural space (located in the spine just outside of the sac containing spinal fluid). Its goal is to provide pain relief by reducing the inflammation of the nerve roots as they exit the spine.

What can I expect on my first visit?

Your first visit is usually an initial consultation and evaluation. A physical exam will be performed and a plan of care will be formulated.

What are the risks of the procedure?

Risks associated with this procedure are rare and often dependant upon other variables such as underlying injury or disease. Specific risks are best determined by your healthcare provider on an individual basis.
