Cardiac Services

The Cardiac Services Department at Galesburg Cottage Hospital offers a wide range of diagnostic tests and therapy treatments for the cardiac patient. Cardiac Services is staffed by an exercise physiologist, registered nurses, exercise specialists and licensed practical nurses. All staff members are licensed and certified in their area of specialty in the department. The medical director who oversees the department is a cardiologist.

Exercise Stress Test

This is a test to determine the presence of coronary heart disease. Exercise is generally performed on a treadmill, where the stress on the heart can be controlled. The physician and technicians observe EKG, blood pressure and patient symptoms to obtain a thorough and accurate assessment of the heart.

Cardiolyte Scan

Radioactive substances can be used to further evaluate the heart's performance during exercise. Modern scanning cameras can aid in pinpointing the locations of blockages in the arteries.

Echocardiogram and Color Doppler

An ultrasound procedure used to evaluate the heart's valves, chambers, and muscle function. Doppler technology is used to assess abnormal blood flow.

Holter monitoring

A computer measures heart rhythm functions over a 24-hour period and analyzes heart rate variability. Physicians interpret the data and determine the severity of the heart rhythm problem.

Event Monitoring

Used with individuals where the Holter monitor did not reveal the heart rhythm problem. A phone-transmitted monitor can be carried for up to a month to try to reveal the problem.

Cardio Beepers

A telephone transmitter is used to determine the function of a patient's pacemaker. Sound waves are sent over the phone and converted to an EKG signal. The signal is then analyzed by the physician for normal functioning of the pacemaker.

Vascular Laboratory

Ultrasound evaluations of arteries in the neck and in the legs are used to detect the presence of blockages of these arteries that may lead to stroke. Evaluation of the legs can reveal blood clots and narrowing of these blood vessels.

Adenosine Scan

This nuclear medicine exam is used for patients who are unable to exercise due to orthopedic limitations. A drug known as Adenosine is used to emulate heart exercise.
